Message from the Superintendent

Hello, this is Will Hoffman, Superintendent of Madison County Schools.  I am reaching out about an important issue and hope to enlist the help of our parents and guardians.  Madison County Schools works diligently to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.  Recently, we have faced incidents of students making threats of violence and using social media to reference acts of violence at school.

When we are faced with these issues, as a school system, we have to take every statement and post seriously regardless of the intent of the student.  The school system is obligated to investigate the situation hand in hand with law enforcement and social services.  Making a threat of violence at school violates the criminal law of North Carolina and our student code of conduct.  Such threats may result in school suspension and potentially even criminal charges.

As a parent or guardian, please talk with your child about social media and the serious impact it can have on them and others.  While a young person may have no ill intent, these issues must be taken seriously.  I thank you for listening and for your support of Madison County Schools. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact my office or your child’s principal.

Thank you and have a great evening.
